Description
Feb: 27th 1917 "B.N. Home" Petrograd.
"Nothing doing" - but still hoping! I wonder will we ever get away? Strikes me we're here for the "duration"! Petrograd is becoming more & more unsettled & the strikes are spreading. There will be a big "bust up" one day soon. The Duma opens to-day & warnings have been sent to civilians, on no account to go out in the streets - some "fun" is expected evidently. There has been quite a lot of shooting in the streets & guns are concealed all over Petrograd. The Cossacks are in possession, a regiment of them has been sent up from the Caucausus [Caucasus]. It is fine to see a company of them marching along. They are all well mounted on beautiful black horses.
They are well made, wiry men, with bright, black eyes, clad in simple uniforms of a dark brownie hue, & poised on the saddle in such a manner as stamps its owner the born horseman that he is. His ordinary appearance as he trots along with his regiment has nothing the least intimidating about it! But put that man to the business he loves more than all else in life (namely the business "to kill") & he becomes a demon incarnate! Utterly fearless himself,
