"Extract from the diary of an anonymous German soldier of the eleventh battalion of Chasseurs, XIth Army Corps, mentioning the massacres at Leffe and Dinant.

'At Leffe. Nineteen civilians shot. Women who implore mercy, while we march towards the Meuse. Another ten men shot. Since the King [of the Belgians] has ordered the defence of the country by every means, the order has been given us to shoot all the male inhabitants. At two in the afternoon furious rifle and cannon firing, and heavy artillery fire on the Meuse. At Dinant about a hundred men or more were gathered together and shot.' p. 77 (with photographic facsimile), 'Les Violations des Lois de la Guerre par l'Allemagne.' Paris, 1915."
