Title
The Plebiscite in Alsace-Lorraine
Description
"Fritz: 'M'amselle Alsace-Lorraine, had we not better have a plebiscite about whom you really like best?'"
"There is often a delightful humour about Raemaekers' cartoons which contrasts strangely with the bitterness of his satire. The humour is not only that which is shown in the line, in this case in the utter imbecility of the German's face, but in the conception of the idea underlying the cartoon. It is quite conceivable that Germany has her doubts as to the state of affection in which she is held by Alsace-Lorraine, and only a Germany such as that epitomised in this drawing could remain in doubt after the national expression has shown itself to be resolutely French for the last fifty years."
