The howitzer was an artillery weapon designed to propel heavy shells at a steep angle over medium distances. They developed from canons and were first used in the 17th century. They were a suitable weapon for the First World War's trench warfare due to the steep angle of their missile's descent as they were more likely to hit their target than longer-range/ lower trajectory weapons.
