Title
Resting on the Road to Harvest
Description
In this etching a group of agricultural workers are shown resting in the open air. The title suggests that they are on their way to harvest crops, and to the left of the composition two figures are shown continuing their journey.

In the early 19th century seasonal migration was common among agricultural labourers, with Highlanders travelling to the farms of East Lothian to take part in the annual harvest.

This scene is very similar to David Deuchar's etching Haymakers Resting, which depicts a group of sleeping figures beneath a large haystack. Like Deuchar, Geikie chooses to obscure the faces of his two slumbering workers. Their languid forms appear as if they are almost part of the landscape.
