Title
Section from Theatres of the East, a Japanese handscroll painting
Description
Section of a handscroll painting depicting the theatre district of Edo, or Tokyo in Japan as it is known today.

There is all kinds of life taking place here, in front of the street and behind the facade. The different shops have various objects for sale including textiles and vegetables. Further back we can see a male actor (identified by his purple head covering) dancing behind a screen whilst a musician plays. There is a fundraising booth for a temple and on the right, acrobats perform on a tightrope above an audience seated on the floor.
Back in the street, is that someone being led away from an entranceway?
