Description

An image taken across a slated rooftop of housing in the New Town from the rear of a house (probably no. 26) on India Street looking towards the rear of Doune Terrace. The view takes in the westernmost house on the south side of Gloucester Place (no. 15). The gap between 15 Gloucester Place and the start of Doune Terrace is formed by Gloucester Lane.

Thomas Keith's elder brother George Skene Keith was also a surgeon and photographer. They were in practice at 58 Northumberland Street in 1853-54 and 1854-55. George Skene Keith transferred to 57 Northumberland Street and Thomas Keith to 26 India Street. When Thomas Keith returned from Turin in late 1851 he rented a room from his brother, George at 58 Northumberland Street. He probably stayed at this address until his marriage in 1854.

This image seems to be taken from the rear of 26 India Street and possibly from the room in which Thomas Keith stayed at the time.
