Description
This print depicts Act 4, Scene 2 from the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy'. The action takes place at the village school where Sugawara has hidden his son and heir Kan Shusai. The evil lord Shihei has ordered Matsuomaru (seated centre) to identify and behead Kan Shusai. Each child is brought before Matsuomaru for inspection, before being released.
