Leith Miscellany Vol I
Explore Reverend Dr James Scott Marshall's unique and eclectic social history collection of Leith. The volumes contain photographs, postcards, presscuttings and ephemera and this is volume I in a series of thirteen volumes, represented across thirteen online exhibitions.

James Scott Marshall was born in Leith in 1913 attending Leith Academy and studying at Edinburgh University. His first position as a minister was in Twechar in East Dumbartonshire. He returned to Leith in 1947 as minister of the Kirkgate Church. In 1973 when South Leith Parish Church and Kirkgate Church reunited, after 233 years apart, Dr Marshall became associate minister.

The depth of knowledge of the history of Leith earned Dr Marshall a reputation as the area's historian. He completed his doctorate on the History of Leith and wrote histories of South Leith and Kirkgate Church, The Church in the Midst and The Story of North Leith Church.

In 1990 Dr Marshall retired after 51 years in the parish ministry and settled in St Andrews. He was able to continue his research and writing until 2003 when a stroke left him with impaired mobility.

As part of the 400th Anniversary Celebrations of South Leith Parish Church, Dr Marshall was elected one of the 12 Pillars of Leith by the community in respect of his contribution he made to the area.

He died on January 8th, 2010 aged 96.
