Life in the trenches was often stagnant and full of miseries like mud, barbed wire, rats, rain and trench foot. The dismal life in the trenches was not helped by the food; hot food, though badly wanted by the men in the trenches, was nearly impossible to provide as food carriers had to run the vast expanses of the trenches while dodging stray bullets.
