About the artist
Name
Scharffenberg, Georg
Biography
Georg Scharffenberg lived between c1530 and c1607. His best-known work is the Dance of Death woodcut series he completed around 1576. Scharffenberg's woodcuts were supposedly based on a Dance of Death mural in Basel, but the visual evidence suggests that actually Scharffenberg depended more heavily on Hans Holbein the Younger's Dance. There are editions of both Scharffenberg's and Holbein's Dances in Central Library's Dance of Death Collection.
