1960s - Five Decades of Toys (1950-2000)
This exhibition highlights some of the most popular toys and games of the 1960s.

The 1960s saw a rise in numerous science fiction inspired toys. Television programmes like Dr Who were being shown as America and Russia competed to get the fist man in to space. The 1960s also encouraged tighter safety regulations over the manufacture of toys. The British Standards Institute issued new regulations in 1961 on sharp edges, toxic dyes and fastenings. Ideas on how toys could be used for education gave rise to 'educational' toys such as the Play Family by manufacturers Fisher Price. Whilst plastic dolls like Barbie and Sindy were taking over the world with their stylish good looks and fashion accessories.

Take a look at more must-have toys from the 20th Century with our 'Five Decades of Toys' exhibitions showcasing iconic children's games and toys from the Fifties, Seventies, Eighties and Nineties.
