Title Edinburgh International Festival programme covers 1947-1980
Description
The Edinburgh International Festival was established in 1947 in a spirit of optimism. Its aim was to stage a major international cultural event in Edinburgh, showcasing first-rate performances of classical music, dance, opera and theatre to 'provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit' and enrich the cultural life of Scotland, Britain and Europe. The Festival was founded by Rudolf Bing the General manager of Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Henry Harvey Wood the head of the British Council in Scotland and civic leaders. The Festival takes place annually in August.
