Description
Actor portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV. The print depicts two figures drawn from Kabuki theatre. The character of Wankyu is shown wearing a purple hat and holding a fox mask. In front of him stands an actor dressed as a medieval warrior.
The five main festivals that featured in the Edo-period calendar were the New Year (Spring Festival), Doll's Festival or Children's Day (3rd lunar month), Boy's Festival (5th lunar month), Obon (7th lunar month) and the Autumn Festival. The Kabuki theatre's bi-monthly programme was structured to coincide with these popular festivals.
