Title
An Auld Couple
Description
Although Geikie's work is known for its broadly humorous nature, he was also interested in serious human relationships.
This etching portrays an elderly couple seated in the doorway of a house. The old man has fallen asleep, while his wife seems to be engaged in some quiet activity on her lap, possibly sewing or reading. Their peaceful expressions hint at their shared years of contentment in spite of their relative poverty. The contrast of sunlight and darkness in the doorway creates a simple yet striking composition.
