Born in 1827, William McEwan served his apprenticeship with Edinburgh brewer John Jeffrey before establishing the Fountain Brewery in 1856. By the 1860s he had established both a large Scottish market and a successful colonial export trade. When he entered politics in 1888, William Younger was appointed as the company's manager. In 1889, the company was registered as a limited liability company to acquire the business and in 1907 acquired the trade of Alexander Melvin & Co of the Boroughloch Brewery in Edinburgh. In 1931, the company merged with William Younger & Co to form Scottish Brewers Ltd, which in 1960, merged with Newcastle Breweries to form Scottish & Newcastle Brewers Ltd. The Fountain Brewery closed at the end of 2004.
